One of the most successful functions in Blantyre in early 1905, was a teachers dance, which had been promoted by the Blantyre School Board.
On the evening of Friday 3rd March 1905, teachers and their partners gathered together in the large hall at Auchinraith School (then only 5 years old). Invites were extended to members of the Board with Major Ness greeting those who arrived.
Dr Grant, Chairman of the Board made a welcome address before the dancing began. Johnston’s Blue & Scarlet band was the live entertainment and dancing was kept up with great animation from everybody until an early hour.
Upon reading this report, I couldn’t help but feel that whilst there would have been food at such an event, that the refreshments, in these times of frowning upon such excesses, I’m sure would have been of a non alcoholic flavour! The school is pictured in this era in this rare photo.
