Even at the height of a 1970’s global fuel and oil crisis, look at the prices at the Esso garage at the top of Forrest Street, junction of Glasgow Road back in the day. These were eye watering prices at the time, stopping people from wanting to fill up their vehicles.
Wonder what they would think of £1.65 this week?!

Those prices would have been per gallon. Equivalent to about 15p a litre.
Those prices were PER GALLON!
I bought a wee 50cc motorbike from a guy in the office in East Kilbride. It actually had a reserve tank which I had to use to get home. I immediately went to (Wullie?) O’Neills. When he came out, I asked him to “fill it up”. Didn’t know how small a tank it was. “that’ll be 38p” I was told. I said that I wanted to fill up and was told “Aye son, it IS filled”! Those were the days….38p did me almost 2 weeks going to and from the office!
