I’m not sure who this rather trendy chap is in the foreground, but I DO know that he’s in Blantyre!
This photo is from Springtime 1979 and is of course Glasgow Road, From the top of John Street, it looks over to the south side of the road. The traffic lights at the junction of Craig Street, a street which was going through rapid change with the compulsory purchase orders served on many houses. Work would soon commence later that year in clearing those acquired homes and indeed the infant school you see in the background, ready to make way for Asda.
Interestingly, traffic lights are still there in that position today, the bottom of Craig Street now roughly where the pedestrian crossing is today from Asda going over to the park.
Theres very little left in this photo relating to what’s there today.
