1890’s Toddler With Cycles

This photo is from the David Ritchie collection shared with Blantyre Project. The female toddler looks well dressed, perhaps a Sunday outing. I think this is (once again) one of David Ritchie’s daughters, most likely in the 1890s. The Ritchie family at the time lived at School Lane and there are other photos in this series that show David and his wife on those bicycles.

The location is identified as the top of General Bridge at Stoneymeadow Road. I can’t imagine how bumpy that road would be or given the early tyres on such bicycles. It would certainly be an easy cycle though coming down the hill from Greenhall back into Blantyre!
