Searching the River

Jo Kelly and her daughter took some time out yesterday to go to the Calder and do a spot of searching in the river. The Rotten Calder is flowing really low just now and it provided a great opportunity to see if they could find anything interesting. And they did!

Amongst the various pottery and ironwork was this strange object, a circular ball shape with a hole through. When cleaned up it looked like the finial of a fence or some sort of gate post. Any ideas what it could be?

Cullen Shaw Looks like the ornamental finial that goes on top of a tubular steel fence post. The horizontal poles passed through the hole. Popular in 50s, 60s and 70s in public parks and large houses.
