Bernard Kelly writes, “I’m doing my Family Tree and found out my Grandparents AND Great Grandparents came over from Ireland both were Farmers but worked in the mines. They lived in Coats Land, Cross Row, and Baird’s Row, Blantyre. My mother Nellie Kelly (nee McMonagle) also got married there with relatives by name of Doran still living there. Have you any details about the mines? They ended up living in John St, Blantyre.”
Pictured are Peter McMonagle and Willie Corrigan.
Mining in Blantyre and the various pits that were once in this town is explored here https://blantyreproject.com/blantyre-coal-mining/
Digging a little deeper, in 1905 I see Peter McMonagle lived at Coatsland. Part of the building he lived in still exists today and is now a hairdressers at Priory Street at its junction of Glasgow Road. You can read more about the former Coats tenement here :https://blantyreproject.com/2017/12/coats-tenements-glasgow-road/ I’ve attached my line drawing showing how it must have looked like, set against a modern context.
