Stephen McCall shared this painting with me recently. It’s by Blantyre artist Eric Marley.
The vantage point is from the top of John Street looking across to the south side of Glasgow Road. Incredibly, we can date the year of this painting, as it’s a real snapshot in time. A window into the past combining old and new buildings.
In the background is the St Andrews Church at the corner of Church Street. The building, I believe hadn’t been opened yet at the time this painting was done, as the old tenements on the right, between Church Street and Logan Street were demolished at the end of 1981 and the church didn’t open until March 1982. I do think this painting was done at the end of 1981.
