What a fantastic photo this is! Photographed recently by Jack Byres, it’s full of character and perhaps a timely reminder that not all buildings stand the test of time.
This is McCaffrie’s Building in Springwells as it looks today, but uncommonly photographed from the back, away from Glasgow Road. Many people will know it more recently as being home to Miller’s Fireplaces, beside Dunns Food and Drink.
For many decades this building sat next to Robertson’s Ginger Factory and many will associate it with the Duncan, Fraser and Miller families.
One of the earliest buildings in Springwell, it has suffered badly from subsidence and was recently auctioned for as low as £15,000.
I’ll be writing about this building in detail shortly.
