Auld Photos

June 2019 was quite the month for people turning up and handing in things to my door! Like this big yellow box from George Hay, packed full of “auld photos” of Blantyre. A treasure trove of nostalgia collected over several decades and stuffed full of photos of Blantyre that even I’ve not seen. I look forward to sharing these photos online which I think as they mostly relate to 60s , 70s and 80s will stir a lot of memories.

Let’s start things off from 1983 with this photo of Devlin Grove, then newly constructed. How different this must have been for Blantyre residents to see the narrowness of Glasgow Road suddenly opened up like a Boulevard. Modern, bright and a far cry from the busy streets that trams once ran through.

The Council’s new housing complex was much needed in Blantyre at that time and there was little opposition to a large, modern building of this nature. You can see the carriageway different tones and new footpaths still to be surfaced where the decision had been take to remove the T junction at the top of John Street and move it slightly eastwards with the creation of a small new roundabout. Again, to residents this must have felt quite different.
