Kirkyard Tree Felled

Timber! The large tree to the west of the old Kirkyard in High Blantyre was completely felled on Tuesday 12 March 2019.

The 150 year old tree was storm damaged and had a dangerous lean. It was carefully removed, whilst the car park was closed off. The tree was visible from Main Street, just in case you’re wondering why it all looks slightly different.

Counting the tree rings at over 150 years, the tree dates back to the time of the removal of the old church from the kirkyard and the building of the current church.

The nearby church hope to use some of the wood to make a seating bench.

Marion Jones Shame but had to be done.
Drew Fisher What a pity. I hope a new one is planted in its place so our children’s children’s children can enjoy. Let’s leave them the beautiful legacy our forebears did for us.
Elizabeth Grieve This is South Lanarkshire Council, you’d be better planting the tree yourself because it will be years before the council will do it sadly
Eleanor Clark Went looking for our Grandmothers grave there yesterday the cemetery looks terrible
Margaret Nimmo Lehmann Very sad to see that go, remember it well.
Marian Maguire So sad to see a silent part of Blantyre history gone, but has to be safe.
