Attached is David Livingstone’s birth certificate which can be found with a simple search on various ancestry websites.
Perhaps however, more uncommon is the will of David Livingstone eg. records of his financial estate upon death. What would it reveal? Was David Livingstone a wealthy man? It’s something you don’t often read about.
The will attached shows a total of £1,463, 19s and 6d was left upon his death. A considerable sum in the 1870’s, worth around £500,000 in today’s money. The answer therefore does have to be that Livingstone was ‘relatively’ wealthy upon his death but the sum is perhaps less than many people would have expected for somebody who was in the public spotlight and for what he had accomplished.
