1979 Horse Derby at Bardykes

In July 1979, Blantyre Round Table hosted a horse derby at Bardykes Farm. Over 4,500 people attended the successful event and spectators came from afar to see the horses and riders in action.

These pictures show some of the people attending that day. Lanarkshire Newspaper Distributor John Morgan (pictured seated) kept an eye on 13 year old son Ian, who was competing (also pictured).

Young fans sit quietly listening to advice from older participants. Kenny Balls Jazzmen are pictured having a few refreshments. The band were known then for “Midnight in Moscow”. Altogether , the fundraiser was held over 2 days.
