1982 Alan Mair’s Mural

“Have brush, will travel” was the message from Blantyre’s town artist, Alan Mairs (picture front). Throughout March 1982, Alan had become a familiar sight about town, temporarily employed by a council grant to turn his artistic talents to the benefit of the community. Alan who is from Rutherglen was also involved in tutoring youth groups.

One of his major projects during his stay, was the painting of a large mural in the Glasgow Road Community Centre.

Helping him to brighten up the building were the members of an unemployed group met at the centre. Three of the men in that group are pictured. John Cushley, Jim Reid and Andy Thomson.
