1960s Auchinraith Junction

1960s Auchinraith junction with chimneys in background wmPictured here in the 1960’s is the former, disused railway at Auchinraith Junction. Looking northwards, the chimneys of Whistelberry Colliery are in the background. This railway track is no longer there and today is the Springwells sliproad coming off Glasgow Road on to the East Kilbride Expressway near Lidl.

How very different this scene was even only 50 years ago.

On social media:

Tom McGuigan I remember one of the buildings having a advertisement hoarding for 5 boys chocolate bars
Helen Allan That’s what I remember
Moyra Lindsay Oh yes. The railway ran behind our house in Rador Place. We left there in 1952. Coop coal dept was in the yard at Auchinraith Road just beside the line.
The Blantyre Project Moyra – was it Rador or Radnor Place? I thought it had an “n” it in, but i may be wrong.
Bill Hunter Used to do Traffic Point at this junction, with a very large Flood light a Top of a Lamp Post. Struck by many a bus, truck and cars. Black and blue toes etc.
The Blantyre Project exact same view now. Looking down the on sliproad from Springwells up to Auchinraith.

Alex Forrest I remember playing there as a kid living in springwells
Bill Graham My Aunt, Tean Mcdade worked that box as a signalman during the war.
