Acquiring 19 Church Street

Thank you to Michael Barrett who emailed me a copy of this old lawyer’s letter showing that his father’s business RG Barrett bought 19 Church Street from the liquidators of former Thomas Baxter & Sons in June 1973.

Such letters are like gold-dust to a local historian in being able to determine and record accurate dates for businesses moving, being acquired or winding up.

19 Church Street is the garage / workshop at the eastern end of the street which still exists today. It was likely built in 1912 by William Adam. Michael’s father had been trading at Craig Street manufacturing and repairing vehicle body sills in the early 1970s, and this letter shows them moving across to Church Street.

As always for ANY Blantyre related documents, photos or articles, thank you kindly for sharing.
