School Teacher killed on Glasgow Rd

A distressing bus fatality occurred on Monday 22nd October 1928 on Glasgow Road where a young lady was killed.

The victim was schoolteacher Miss Peggy McLinden (26), daughter of Hugh McLinden a clothier and tailor of Glasgow Road. Peggy had just stepped off the bus coming from Hamilton and when crossing the road had failed to observe the approach of another bus travelling in the opposite direction.

She was knocked down and sustained terrible injuries. The accident happened only a few yards from the house of the doctor (Parkville). The doctor was quickly on the scene but the young woman survived only a few minutes. Miss McLinden had been a teacher at St Marys RC school in Hamilton.

Do you know the McLinden family or related to this ancestry line or perhaps know more about this sad story?

Pictured is the scene of the accident. Tramlanes are still apparent on Glasgow Road and of course this was at a time before Glasgow Road was widened, so all the homes along Glasgow Road had much larger gardens than they do now.
