Drumhead Service 1929

1929 Drumhead Service Tunrbull & BarrA “Drumhead Service” is a religious service attended by members of a military unit while in the field. It is usually attended by active servicemen and women and accompanied by their local ministers and clergy.

One such Blantyre service took place on Sunday 8th September 1929 and is pictured here in a photo from Hamilton Advertiser records. Members of Blantyre British Legion attended the service which had speaker Dr. L MacLean Watt at the centre of the photo. Alongside him are J Myres, the stooped minister is Rev C. S. Turnbull, Captain JohnsonTD, J.U Duncan and the man on the right with the now rather ‘unfashionable’ pre WW2 moustache is Captain Barr, an architect who lived at Calderview, Hunthill Road High Blantyre.
