Parkneuk Right of Way

Continuing this weeks look at Blantyre’s Right of Ways. Today, we look at Auchentibber area and in particular:

Parkneuk Road to Newhousemill Road, Council reference H/6

“This right of way is over 200 yards long and starts diagonally opposite the War Memorial on Parkneuk Road, Auchentibber. It is a farm track 8 foot wide with grass verges on both sides and Heathland beyond. It passes Newfield Farm, an old disused Limekiln, one of 3 still standing in Hamilton District, and ends on Newhousemill Road.

The map of 1864 shows this path going as far as where the Limekiln now stands but the limekiln is not indicated yet at that time. The paths bears right past Newfield to Dykehead. Where the path now ends is an old Pit (Ironstone). The 1914 map shows the Limekiln next to the mine at the junction of the path mentioned above. This right of way, now constituted appears to be accessed from Quarries, Limekiln and at Auchentibber itself.

Birds including Yellowhammers and in Winter, Redwings can be seen in this area. There is also evidence of foxes and hares.”

Pictured by myself in September 2014 is the limekiln and this right of way (a favourite of mine now to walk my dog!) and an aerial photo showing its location.
