Pictured here in 1955 is the Blantyre Oil Works. Located at the very bottom of Forrest Street, the building was situated in an area of heavy industrial activity. Across the road was the saw mills, which had existed for some 70 years previous. Beyond that , Blantyre Foundry and the Blantyre Engineering Works.
The Oil works is shown as a much smaller building in 1898, with a railway siding coming in from the adjacent railway, In later maps large storage tanks are situated beside the building and by 1936 map, the building shown in the 1955 photo exists. The railway is just out the photo to the left. To the right are the start of the rows of homes on Forrest Street itself. Even in 1955, large oil tanks can be sen stored outside the large building.
