Isn’t it great when you can get to a point in historical research of starting to recognise people that lived a 100 years ago! That happened to me recently, when I saw this photo of the Auchentibber Inn (old name Auchintibber). Pictured between 1905 – 1908 when the Inn was newly renovated, two men stand in the door entrance. The men are not named on the photo.

However, from previous research, I immediately recognised Robert (Bob) Souter on the left, the Innkeeper and friend of Inn Owner J.B.H Struthers. To the right, I recognise R Wallace, a local miner and quoiting player. Mr. Wallace lived nearby at Clyde Row, Auchentibber and so the Inn was literally right across the road, temptation I’m sure for local miners on many an evening after work. I love this photo, which is a portion of a larger photo by David Ritchie. Its clarity, resolution and character captures the scene perfectly.

** Update, I have since found out that Bob Soutter left Auchentibber on Thursday 28th February 1907, therefore this picture is definitely before then.
