Photographed here by David Ritchie of Main Street in 1908 are ten well dressed men at the Rotten Calder, High Blantyre. The little building on the right was known as The Hermitage and the bridge crossed from Blantyre Parish into Kilbride’s. This is located beyond Auchentibber, in the Calderwood Glen.
This looks like an outing of sorts, perhaps of a local sports team, quoiting or curling? The hermitage building no longer stands, but the large rock as it’s foundation is still there, known today as “the grey mare”.
Alex Bowie, a distant relative has kindly given me permission to share this picture here.
