1936 Allotments at Stonefeld behind Dixons Rows

I was interested to see “Allotments” noted at the side of Stonefield Road on the 1936 map.

The plots were located in two large fields behind Dixons’s Rows, the miners homes. Hemmed in by the Gasworks on Stonefield Road (on the later Letham’s Garage site).

The worked gardens were not shown on earlier maps and may have been created as a means to supplement the food of the nearby miners. It is unknown who had the rights to work this land.

Today, the allotments are now a modern housing estate, in the exact location of Kinnoull Place and parts of Camelon Crescent and Winton Crescent.

  1. There were also three allotments behind the old Community Centre at one time. One was worked by Rab & Jock Jackson, another by Jimmy Burgess from Station Road and one by my father. They had all been given up by the early sixties.
