I’ve sometimes pondered over this photo of Barnhill dated to 1910.

There’s a huge pile of dirt in the foreground that has masonry amongst it. A shovel leans against the house (Pathhead) most likely the person doing the work was on a break. I wondered though, what the pile was and why would it be laying at the top of the Pech Brae?  I was recently given this photo in high resolution, copied here and I’d hoped to pick out more details, but sadly no….I can still only guess what the work involved.

In the background, the tenements on the left are now gone and I was once told the little pitched roof building adjacent to it was a little shop. On the right two men stand by a cart at the Hoolets Nest Pub.
