In Summer 1948, the newly opened Station Road prefabs didn’t get off to the best start. For 3 or 4 weeks, the local Country Council forgot or did not register the new homes and as such, the refuse collection didn’t take place for a whole month. Dustbins overflowed and rubbish lay in streets, discarded and blown by the wind.

The new prefabs were designed to be safe and modern and the situation was not acceptable. By mid July the authorities were made aware of the problem by protesting residents and the local scavenging lorries came to empty the area of refuse the following Monday.
