Born in Burnbank on 13th October 1942, Boxer Walter McGowan is pictured here with Jack Solomons (right) at Blantyre boxing club in June 1966. He had been boxing since the age of 9. The man in the middle is McGowan’s father. He used the name Joe Gans (a famous boxer and ex miner). Photo was taken on 4th June 1966. Walter gained quite the following in Blantyre.
