A Singular Character

teaIn 1826, the Westmorland Gazette ran a story about a Blantyre woman. Reprinted below in it’s entirety.

“There is an old woman living at Blantyremoor, parish of Blantyre rather a singular character. She is eighty years of age – she never drunk a cup of tea, never had a tea cup or had a tea pot in her house, never bought a particle of tea, but once bought three farthings worth as medicine for a friend, never had a dram glass in her house and never drank a glass of whiskey in her life.”. It is a wonder she managed to live to such a grand age.
