In May 1893, Mr Watt of High Blantyre received a rare 1671 violin made by Francesco Rugeri for repair. Valued at £1,500, equivalent to over £300,000 today, the instrument was well-preserved and beautiful. Its mysterious arrival suggested a high level of trust in Mr Watt from the owner, who remained discreet.
