Teetotal New Year, 1892

New Years Night 1892 and Victorian Blantyre residents were settling in with friends and family on 1st January to continue the festivities.

Like these days, for many people this involved having a few ‘refreshments’. But one group of people were determined to show that a good time could be had…. in the absence of alcohol.

The Blantyre Temperance Society met at the Temperance Institute with Mr. T Eadie presiding. The company was about 25 people who entertained each other with jokes, stories, songs, games…and tea.

All present enjoyed themselves immensely and at parting had expressed their regret that such meetings weren’t taking place more regularly.
