Blantyre Project reader Max McInness has uncovered an intriguing little object while out metal detecting at Blantyreferme — and it may have quite a story to tell!
The small cast metal piece appears to show a horse-drawn artillery cannon or military field gun, complete with large spoked wheel detail. The word “UBIQUE” can also be made out near the top, a famous motto strongly associated with the Royal Artillery or Canadian Royal Artillery.
Early thoughts suggest this could possibly be part of an old military sweetheart brooch, cap badge fitting, decorative mount or small commemorative item dating from the late Victorian or early 20th Century period — perhaps around 1890 to 1920.
Its worn condition hints it may have spent well over 100 years buried beneath the Lanarkshire soil before Max’s detector picked it up again.
An amazing local find and another reminder that fascinating pieces of history are still waiting to be discovered beneath our feet around Blantyre.
