New Station Road, 1892

In April 1892, surveyors were deployed to Glasgow Road set with the task of taking measurements for a brand new road in Blantyre. The road was to connect Blantyre Station back up to Glasgow Road at Stonefield.

The new road to be named ‘New Station Road’ would be in addition to Station Road and would commence eastwards of the railway signal box and would go directly north to the main road.

This is the road which would eventually be renamed John Street. With Stonefield becoming more heavily populated, this saved pedestrians having to walk the length of Glasgow Road and Station Road, by taking a short cut.

New Station Road, certainly in name only lasted a decade or so and was renamed after the death of John Clark Forrest in 1893. However, we see New Station Road still on the 1899 map of Blantyre, the John Street name coming shortly after that.
