New Lanark – The Village which changed the world

I’ve been looking at some other Scottish history which I hope readers will also find interesting. Built in 1785 on the banks of the River Clyde, New Lanark became one of the most important industrial settlements in the world. Under the management of Robert Owen, the cotton mills didn’t just produce cloth—they pioneered workers’ rights.

Children were educated instead of exploited, housing was improved, and welfare schemes were introduced decades ahead of their time. At its peak, over 2,000 people lived and worked here, attracting visitors from across Europe eager to see a new way of living.

Today, New Lanark is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, proof that Lanarkshire helped shape modern social reform.

🌍 Was this Scotland’s greatest gift to the modern world? Was this what Blantyre should have done with our Mills?
