A mystery arose in Blantyre on Friday 23rd September 1892 which had the town talking.
On that afternoon, a constable was making his rounds near Blantyreferme and discovered a cart belonging to a Tollcross baker. The vehicle was at the side of the road near Craigknowe Farm (then occupied by John McIntyre). The policeman made his inspections and noticed that the horse was not there and within a few minutes, it was spotted in amongst a nearby field of growing corn.
The horse had already helped itself to plenty of the crop and a considerable amount of damage had been done to the crops in general. Puzzled, the policeman led the horse back to the cart and waited a while but the driver was missing. What made the matter more strange was an empty bag of cash was found on the cart.
The bakery owners were contacted in the next day or so and arrangements were made for the empty bag, horse and cart to get back to the business. However, the mystery continued, as there was no sign of the driver.
