A daring late-night theft shook the estate of Calderwood Castle on Saturday, 1st October 1892, leaving servants stunned and valuables gone without a trace.
On the Thursday evening before, the castle’s grooms had slipped away to enjoy a party, returning in the small hours of Friday morning. But their light-hearted night out turned grim when they discovered that the entire stable range had been broken into during their absence. Offices had been ransacked, drawers emptied, and belongings strewn about in a scene of utter chaos.
Worse still, a significant haul of clothing had vanished — jackets, shirts, and more — taken from right under their noses. Whoever carried out the theft had chosen their moment with precision, striking when the estate lay quiet and unguarded.
Was this an opportunistic robber who seized the moment, or someone who knew the castle’s routines all too well? What do you think happened at Calderwood Castle that night? Pictured is Calderwood Castle in the following decade to this story.
