A lively evening of music, speeches, fine dining and prizes — all in High Blantyre back in 1892.
An extract from the Hamilton Herald Newspaper in October 1892 said, “The annual gathering of the Blantyre Bowling Club was held in the Masonic Hall, High Blantyre, on the evening of Tuesday, 18th inst. About fifty gentlemen sat down to supper, purveyed by Mr J. B. Struthers in his usual first-class style. “
“The chair was occupied by Mr McNish, president, while Mr Oliphant, vice-president, efficiently discharged the duties of croupier. An exhaustive programme of song and sentiment was entered upon and kept up till a late hour. We are glad to state that this club is in a better condition financially and otherwise than it has been for a considerable number of years.”
“The following is a list of the donors of prizes and the respective winners:— Championship, Mr Jas. Brown; president’s, Mr William Izet; vice-president’s, Mr John Marshall; Mr Russell’s, Mr T. Oliphant; double-handed prize, presented by Messrs Douglas and Maxwell—Messrs Marshall and Blackley; rink prize, presented by Mr Blackley—Messrs Russell, Menzies, Morrison, and Thomson”
Attached is a photo of Blantyre Bowling Club about 10 years later. Can you imagine attending such an event over 130 years ago?
