My father in law was digging over the garden at home here at Croftfoot, High Blantyre a few weeks ago and found this!
It’s not very big as you can see from the scale next to a pen, but was intact. I think he’s likely unearthed a Victorian-era Scottish stoneware bottle, probably used for ink or medicinal liquid, dating to around 1850 –1890s. This one is heavy, thick walled and therefore likely to be on the earlier end of this time period, making it potentially up to 170 years old. These are actually quite common in old gardens, especially near Victorian housing, and they’re a nice tangible piece of local industrial history.
This is a great example as it’s not broken and nicely formed.
