Some extra content about Scotland’s History.
On 31 December 1929, excitement filled the air in Paisley as hundreds of children packed into the Glen Cinema for a festive film showing. But what began as a joyful day turned into one of Scotland’s worst peacetime tragedies.
A smoke bomb used as part of the projection process sparked panic. Although there was no fire, thick smoke filled the building. Children rushed for the exits—but the doors were locked or opened inward, trapping many inside. 71 children died, crushed or suffocated in the chaos.
The disaster shocked the nation and led to urgent changes in cinema safety across the UK. Yet, for decades, it remained little-known outside Paisley—a hidden scar in Scotland’s history.
