Declaration of Arbroath – Scotland’s Cry for Freedom

Some extra content on other Scottish History. On 6 April 1320, a group of Scottish nobles sent a powerful letter to the Pope, known as the Declaration of Arbroath. Written at Arbroath Abbey, it declared Scotland’s right to be an independent nation, free from English rule.

The letter famously states that the Scots will never submit, and that their king, Robert the Bruce, rules only with the people’s consent. It was a bold message—both to Rome and to England—that Scotland was a nation of its own.

The declaration became a symbol of Scottish identity and resistance, and some historians even believe it helped inspire future democratic ideas, like the concept of rule by the people.

📜 Was this the birth of Scottish nationhood?
