Malone – O’Connor Ancestry

Karen McQuade sent me this great photo adding, “My great grandparents James Malone and his wife Agnes ( nee O’Connor). Don’t know the year Paul. What do you think? They had 13 children my Gran McQuade was number 10. I know that He was Irish His mother died and he was sent over as a wee boy. Agnes from Hamilton old town.”

“His Dad was quite old when he was born late 50’s in a second marriage. His mother Ellen Flynn died at 37 hence why he was sent to Scotland.

I was able to reply with: “I’d say the photo was round about the late 1930s? James was born in 1872 and looks about 60 something in this. Agnes was 4 years younger, maybe in her late 50s in this photo? I may be far off the mark. Not sure.

The couple were married in Hamilton on 2nd February 1899 and I’ve attached their marriage certificate. By 1899, both St Mary’s and Our Lady & St Anne’s churches were serving the Roman Catholic community in Hamilton, but I think their certificate is a reference to the main, St Marys. St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church: Located at 120 Cadzow Street, St Mary’s was built in 1846 in the Early English style, making it the second-oldest Catholic church in Lanarkshire after St Margaret’s in Airdrie. Our Lady & St Anne’s Church: Founded in 1883, the original parish building was a church-school structure situated at Quarter Road End. The current church building on Jack Street was opened in 1933.”
