1893 Theft at Blantyre Train Station

1949 Blantyre Train Station

In February 1893, a story about the Blantyre railway station buildings being burgled appeared in local newspapers. Saying, “Another of those burglaries which have been so frequent of late at Caledonian railway stations occurred at Blantyre early yesterday morning. The booking office on the north side was entered, and 2s in money, along with the booking-clerk’s coat, were stolen.

Access was gained by the window, the glass being removed and again set in its place — a sign of the smallness of the apertures used by the thieves. It’s believed that all of these burglaries have been the work of a gang of boys.”

The station is pictured 56 years after that burglary in 1949 as children came to Blantyre from Glasgow as part of a June excursion.
