Powder Magazine License, 1893

At the end of March 1893, at the House of Commons, the Secretary of State was asked for a license for a dynamite or powder magazine store for High Blantyre.

The site chosen was in Auchentibber, but deemed a little close to the hamlet, and asked to be moved further away. The case was unusual to be discussed at such a high level, but the sheer number of objections from householders as to the position had escalated the matter to the higher authority, who willed to overrule the local authority.

As it turned out, the outcome was to position the magazine store further down the hill, nearer Calderside road. The little ruin is still there today.
