Good little anecdote from July 1893. A miner was riding his bicycle down a steep part of the road in the High Blantyre area, when his hat blew off.
A ploughman nearby seeing this happen, quickly picked it up and ran after the bicycle at speed attracting the attention of the oblivious cyclist. Passing the cyclist his hat, the ploughman was most annoyed not to be given any meaningful response, nor even a word of thanks.
Instead the cyclist snatched his hat back and said abruptly to the ploughman, “I’ll need to get a string or something to fix it in place”.
The ploughman, paused for a second still out of breath, his blood still boiling at not having received any thanks and piped up, “A Nail should do it!”
