Broompark Avenue, 1908

This great previously unseen photo is from 1908. Taken at the very end of newly formed street, Broompark Avenue in Blantyre, it shows the new homes to good effect. They look very new in this excellent old photo. The single panes of glass in the windows, the clean stonework, in what looks like well built terraced cottages.

Standing in the doorway is one of the Ritchie girls, the daughter of the photographer. And….in the background on the far right, beyond the fields of Croftfoot which in later decades would become High Blantyre Park, is Croftfoot House, my own home these days.

The railings are long gone, the doors and windows replaced. Today, now with addresses 13 and 15, the roses , fences and railings are gone, the roof is replaced and there are upstairs dormers. With thanks to Alex Bowie for the image.
