Stonefield Rd Tenements, 1893

I’m back to exploring the early 1890s and was intrigued to find an advert about the sale of two tenements formerly on Stonefield Road, that I didn’t know much about.

An advert in October 1893 in the Glasgow Herald noted property and vacant land for sale on Stonefield Road, Blantyre to be sold off in Glasgow. The sale comprised of TWO tenements of substantially built dwelling houses in Stoneifld Road near the Bowling Green (occupied by William Wilkinson and others), with the vacant ground adjoining. A site suitable for building. The whole ground forming 2 Roods, 7 8-10th Poles for the reduced price of £350. Imagine buying land and two tenements of houses for that sum! In context though, it may have been around £70,000 in todays money.

Looking at the 1898 map, I’ve highlighted the two tenements and the land in pink. This was a different era, long before housing estates and although these tenements in one direction had a view over farm fields to Wheatlandhead Farm, in another direction, they looked upon an industrial scene at Dixon’s Colliery Pit no 4 at Larkfield.

The northernmost tenement was demolished sometime between WW1 and WW2, but the other tenement was still there in WW2. Today’s these homes would now be located where 85 – 89 Stonefield Road is.
