Another wee Blantyre story from a long time ago! From 162 years ago taken from the Hamilton Advertiser 4th January 1862.
“STARLINGS. — A nest of these warblers may at present be seen at Broompark, the property of John Gardiner Esq. Their nest is in a box on the branch of a tree.”
Not a rare bird but newsworthy, such was the rural, sleepy news in Blantyre before coal mining arrived. Can you imagine a time when seeing Starlings would make the newspaper local pages!? The location was the former Broompark Farm, just off Broompark Road, in more later times belonging to the Rochhead family. AI pictures the scene.
