Italian Gardens, Blantyre

It’s difficult now to imagine that these beautiful Italian Gardens once existed at High Blantyre.

These postcards from the 1910’s show just how incredible they looked, with climbing flowers and ivy adorning the stone steps, walls and arches. These 2 images were taken from the Quoiting green looking back at the stonework, up towards Parkneuk Road. The ruins of some of these buildings are still there by the roadside in the woodland.

All this went to ruin around WW2, though remnants of the arches can still be seen in winter time when natural growth seasonally dies back.
