It was a taste of the ‘life on the ocean wave’ in October 1977 for the wife of Blantyre born sailor John McCarroll.
Denise McCarroll joined her husband on his ship HMS Gurkha, during an open day for sailors’ families in the firth of Forth.
John (22), was a Marine Engineering Mechanic 1st Class and since joining the service four years earlier had visited places like Tangiers, Malta, Gibraltar and Corfu! A former pupil of St. Joseph’s R.C. High School, his mother, Mrs Shiela McCarroll, lived at Aldersyde Place.
John and Denise at this time had a young son, Peter.
