On Thursday 16th November 1893, a grand concert on behalf of the Blantyre Tennis Club took place in the newly constructed Parish Church Halls at High Blantyre.
The winter evening of entertainment had Major Ness occupying the chair and the hall was filled with a very appreciative audience. These were simpler times, going along with family to hear local singers and musicians. A family night out.
Songs were given by Miss M Chalmers, Miss Grant, Mr James Brown and Mr William Bullion. Bob Lloyd gave some comical songs including, “Hooligan’s Christmas Cake” and “Little Tommy Tompkins”. He also played selections on his mandolin.
Mr. A.B Howie then played two songs on his violin with Mr McKillop as accompanist.
The object of this concert was to raise funds for the repairing of the Tennis courts, situated just off Stonefield Road (at what is now the Bowling club Carpark). A substantial sum was raised after all expenses paid out.
