This wonderful photograph was incredibly taken 146 years ago down the Calder. Pictured is former Milheugh House. The photographer was accomplished and well known. Mr Thomas Annan who photographed this former grand house and many others in 1878.
To put this into context. The main house is pictured on the left and is slightly out the picture. This small block was actually part of the house, connected but situated to the north of it. Double storey, it may have been the servant’s quarters. There were several domestic servants living at Milheugh until 1890s. A large household like this took a lot of maintenance and servants would no doubt be cleaning, cooking, attending to the horses, the garden and general repairs.
The road leads round the back of this block, and through a gap between the main house and the stables. The Milheugh Waterfall is at the other side of the house, slightly outwith the picture on the left.
At the time this picture was taken, the Bannatyne family lived here, having married into the Millar family who had been there previous to this for many generations.
