When the Greenhall Pitch n Putt was open at High Blantyre during the 1970’s, one particular problem was the constant theft of the hired out golf clubs.
By May 1977, then over a dozen clubs were missing in that opening season alone, the Council had enough and decided to act. Gathering in all the clubs, each was marked with a bight paint in the hope it would deter stealing and become known elsewhere that this was Greenhall equipment.
Also added, was the removal of the trusted scheme of simply giving out the clubs to those who paid for a session. Instead, a deposit of 25p was thereafter needed for the club hire (as well as the pitch n putt fee), which meant to get the deposit back, you needed to hand back in the club.
In the following months, thefts reduced and a later report that year suggested that 10 of the missing clubs were handed back in, perhaps because they had been innocently taken by mistake or they “heat” from this story became too much for them to be kept in sheds and garages!
The Greenhall toilets and pitch n putt shop are pictured in 1983, not too long before being demolished.
