What shall we call it? 1895

June 1895 and conversation around Blantyre was about the confirmed news that the village was going to have a dedicated, professional senior football team!

The team was to be formed and would play in the following season. By 6th July, office bearers had been appointed with Mr James Kelly (Celtic) as President and Mr Moses M Hamilton of High Blantyre as Secretary. Prospects were looking extremely rosy with these men at the helm and the wealth of talent being lined up.

A real talking point however, was the name of this new club. What to call it? Reporters in July 1895 said there was a real diversity of opinion on whether the club should be called “Blantyre Victoria” or just simply “Blantyre”, noting at the time the popular opinion of the masses was just “Blantyre to satisfy all. However, ultimately it was down to club officials and the rest as they say is history.

Castle Park is pictured a half century later just after WW2.
